The Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS) is a school created to offer education to Physiotherapists in treating patients with scoliosis and other spinal disorders, according to the general principles of the so called Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises – PSSE. The Barcelona school accredits internationally to help ensure patients with Scoliosis are assessed and treated correctly.
The Barcelona School was founded by Elena Salvá, a Physiotherapist who introduced the German ‘Schroth Method’ to Barcelona during the 1960’s. Thus the BSPTS method was based off Katharina Schroth in 1921.
In the 1980’s, Dr. Manuel Rigo and his wife Dr. Gloria Quera Salvá (Elena’s daughter) started educating Physiotherapists and accrediting them both nationally and internationally under the name of Schroth.
Since 2008, three different branches and concepts have been created from the original Schroth method, one of those being the BSPTS-Conept by Rigo.
The BSPTS/Schroth method aims to:
Decreasing the progression (worsening) of a scoliotic curve
Improving posture
Reducing pain
Increasing functional tolerance
After a comprehensive assessment is taken, the Physiotherapist will profile and analyse the patients curve type. The patient is then taken through the BSPTS/Schroth concept to help them understand the components of scoliosis and how we aim to reorganise the spine.
The principles of BSPTS/Schroth involve the patient going through a series of postural corrections. These corrections are very dependent on the patients curve type. These corrects are taught in a variety of positions such as side-lying and hanging. The patient then commences breathing to help expand area’s that have collapsed, in the aim of reorganising the blocks of the spine.
Once the patient has mastered postural corrections and breathing, they are taught to activate specific muscles that will help re-shape the spine even further.
