What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a lateral curvature (bend of the spine to the side) of the spine that is greater than or equal to a 10 degrees cobb measurement with rotation of unknown. This results in deformity of the trunk and spine.

A scoliosis can be either structural or non-structural:
1) A structural curve: Is where the cobb measurement fails to correct past zero. A structural deformity can be found on an Adam’s test where the patient bends forwards and there is an obvious elevation and deviation of the spine.
2) Non-structural curve: Can correct past zero on a supine lateral side bending x-ray.
What are the Signs and Symptoms of Scolisois?
+ Curved spine
+ Uneven shoulder blades
+ Uneven shoulder blades
+ Humback or rounded shoulders
+ Back Pain
+ Difficulty breathing particularly with exercise
+ Muscle spasm
What is the Treatment of Scoliosis?
1) For mild curves 10-25 degrees:
+ Screening, diagnosis and prevention
+ Physiotherapy scoliosis specific exercises (PSSE)
2) Moderate curves 25-45 degrees:
+ Physiotherapy scoliosis specific exercises (PSSE)
+ Orthopaedic treatment (bracing)
3) Severe curves >50 degrees:
+ Surgical treatment
What is the BSPTS Method?
The BSPTS Concept (Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School) is a form of Physiotherapy scoliosis specific exercises (PSSE) that includes cognitive, sensory-motor and kinaesthetic training to teach the patient to improve his or her scoliosis 3D posture and shape in the assumption that scoliosis promotes curve progression. The therapy is redefined from the Schroth Principles.
