What is Scheurmann's Disease?
Scheuermann’s disease is a condition that results in increased round posture of the spine or a ‘hunched back’. The cause is unknown however it has a strong link to run in the family.
What are the Signs and Symptoms of Scheurmann's Disease?
+ Stiffness in the mid back region
+ Pain in either the cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine
+ Rounded shoulders
How is Scheurmann's Disease Diagnosed?
1) The child can bend forwards while the spine is viewed from the side. In Scheuermann’s the spine comes up at a sharp point rather than a smooth curve.
2) A lateral or x-ray from the side can be taken to measure the severity. A curve of 20-40 degrees is considered normal. An abnormal curve includes the following:
+ Thoracic curve > 45 degrees
+ Schmorls nodes on x-ray
+ Three consecutive wedging vertebrae
What is the Treatment of Scheurmann's Disease?
Physiotherapy is aimed at improving the strength of the muscles that retract the shoulder blades back. Exercises are prescribed to prevent the stiffness from worsening and improve back symptoms. For severe curves braces may be prescribed and in rare circumstances, surgery is performed.
