What is piriformis syndrome (sciatica)?
Piriformis syndrome is a condition that commonly gets confused with sciatica. Piriformis syndrome causes deep pain in the buttock region. This irritates the sciatic nerve causing pain, numbness and tingling in the back of leg.
The piriformis muscle is attached from the lower spine and connects to the upper surface of the femur. It’s role is to rotate the hip and the leg outwards. The cause of this condition is unknown however we suspect that when this muscle tightens due to local irritation this results in compression of the sciatic nerve.
