What is a Flexor Tendon Injury (Jersey Finger)
The flexor tendons of the hand are located on the bottom of the forearm and insert at the ends of the fingers on the palmar side of the hand. Their role is bending the fingers to allow gripping of the hand. A flexor tendon injury is caused by a sharp object slicing part of the tendon or less commonly when the finger has been pulled quickly (such as gripping a jersey). Occasionally, flexor tendons may be partially cut or torn. With a partial tendon tear, it may still be possible to bend your finger, but not completely. These types of tears can be difficult to diagnose.
What are the Symptoms of a Flexor Tendon Injury?
+ Pain over the fingers at the time of injury
+ Inability to bend the finger and make a full fist
+ Swelling of the finger
What is the Treatment of Flexor Tendon Injuries
In most cases the tendon requires surgical fixation and needs to be performed in the first 10 days following the injury. The patient will then be immobilised in a hand splint for 8 weeks and will require weekly Physiotherapy. This is important for this injury as the tendon has a high potential to stick to other structures of the hand. If this occurs it will limit the tendons ability to perform its role in gripping.
