The Physio Bike Fit Process

Cycling is growing in popularity every year. Particularly during Covid, bike sales went through the roof. The bike fitter is becoming more than just adjusting the seat height. The bike fitting process has evolved. The bike fitter is someone who determines the best position for that person based off their past and current medical history, their goals and their experience.

The human body is complex in many ways and we are all different. There is not one significant measurement we rely on but rather we put together a story of that person to make the bike fit them and not the other way round.

The interplay of factors is diverse in a bikefit. Intrinsic factors that as range of motion, muscle activation/strength, injury referral patterns, injury history all play a vital role in the assessment. Extrinsic factors such as bike set-up, position on the bike, cleats etc are another factor in the assessment.

Physiotherapists are trained in analysing biomechanics and relating these biomechanics, a patients clinical history to a specific pathology. From this the Physiotherapist can adjust the bike to help improve performance or pain.

Studies suggest that 67% of cyclists continue riding despite being in a high level of pain. It may be time to be assessed and ensure your bike is set-up correctly for you.
